 Situated on the hill of Monte de Santa Luzia, the Pousada de Viana do Castelo has one of the most beautiful views in Portugal. The Pousada overlooks the town of Viana do Castelo, the estuary of the River Lima and out towards the sandy beaches of Praia do Cabedelo.
 The ancient town of Viana do Castelo was once a major port rivaling Lisbon and nearby Oporto and was the first centre for the shipment of Port to England. The prosperity brought by trade is reflected in the handsome 16th century buildings found in the old town. In its heart is the Praca da Republica, the main square, with its picturesque  renaissance fountain and elegant buildings. Approximately 10 minutes walk from the square is the Museu Municipal. Housed in an 18th century palace, the museum contains examples of Portuguese furniture and ceramics.
 Above the town is the Monte de Santa Luzia. This wooded hill is not only the location of the Pousada but also the temple of Santa Luzia. Although the temple itself is fairly modern, there has been a chapel on the site since the middle ages. At the side of the temple is a staircase (marked Zimborio) leading to an observation platform. The staircase is narrow and steep but opens up on top of the dome rewarding visitors with terrific views of the surrounding countryside, although this can be a little scary, if windy.  Behind the temple below the Pousada, are the ruins of a Celtic “citania”. It includes the foundations to small circular stone houses, partly paved streets and stone walls. The settlement was occupied from around 500 BC and abandoned finally in 500 AD.
 The Pousada was opened as a hotel in 1918 and came under the management of the Pousada group in 1979. It has been recently been renovated and modernised to become a very comfortable place to stay. The restaurant serves a local and international menu including smoked ham with fruit, fake “au gratin” with mayonnaise, Free range chicken and Viana pie.
From Viana do Castelo, take the road to Santa Luzia where you will find the pousada next to the Monastery.
