The town of Palmela is situated about 10 km north of Setubal, one of Portugal's main ports and where a fish market is held each morning. This area is also a wine-making centre and the main event in Palmela is their Festas das Vindimas )Wine Festival) in September.
The Pousada at Palmela is part of the castle, where breathtaking views of the River Sado estuary, Setubal and even Lisbon can be seen on a clear day. The castle also has a row of handicraft shops selling azulejos (tiles), cheeses and the highly acclaimed local wines. The Pousada was opened in 1979 and cleverly blends the old with the new: the glassed in cloisters provide a delightful sitting area and the courtyard is open in fine weather. The restaurant serves regional dishes such as stuffed crab, sole in a beer marinade, chicken pot stew and egg pudding.
Palmela is on the edge of the Serra da Arrabida which is a Natural Park. The granite ridge stands out for miles around and is home to a variety of native mountain flora and fauna. The park is a popular place for walkers and guides are available.
Palmela is on the EN 379 just off the motorway between Lisbon and Setubal. The pousada itself is easily found - just look for the castle.
