The mountain town of Marvao lies to the north of the Alentejo, overlooking the plains towards Spain. The Pousada de Santa Maria is situated at it's heart and, from the reception rooms, enjoys spectacular views.

Marvao was once a fortress town, a link in the chain of outposts along the Spanish border.  It's impregnable walls, some of which date from the 13^th century, protected the town against invaders. The narrow cobbled streets rise upwards through rows of traditional houses towards the castle at the top.  Below the town, the countryside opens up into groves of walnut trees.  To the north are the mountain ranges of Serra de Estrela and to the west the nature park of Serra de Sao Mamede, making this area an ideal spot for walkers.  Roman artefacts have also been found in the area and can be viewed in the municipal museum.

The nearby spa town of Castelo de Vide (Castle of the Vine) covers the slopes around a 14^th century castle.  The old parts of town and the former Jewish quarter provide an enjoyable stroll for visitors.  A tiny 13^th century synagogue, that lies between white washed cottages and a 16^th century fountain, hint at the towns' former past.  To the south of Marvao is Portalegre, the main town of the area.  This walled town is overlooked by the ruins of it's medieval castle and is known for it's connection to the tapestry and silk weaving industry.  Although the boom years are now past, evidence remains in the grand Baroque mansions and townhouses that line the streets in the old quarter.

The Pousada de Santa Maria has been converted from two former private houses and is tucked away in one of Marvao's cobbled streets.  The Pousada offers all the comforts one expects and the views from the roof top restaurant provide an enjoyable experience for diners.  Local dishes are on the menu and include fried bread sausage pastry, roast pork loin with prunes and white pumpkin cake.

From Portalegre, take the IC 13 to Marvao and the pousada is in the village itself.
