This area is hugely different from the beaches of the Algarve or the plains of the Alentejo. Situated in the Serra da Estrela mountain range, the Sao Lourenco Pousada is built of local stone and is designed to be warm, with log fires and wooden paneling, as sub zero temperatures and snow are common in winter: skiing is a possibility in most winters. The area around the Pousada is wonderful for walking and bird watching with a large number of rivers and streams running through wooded slopes.
The Pousada has 21 rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms and a snooker room. Most of all, there are the tremendous views of the local mountains.
The local menu includes a local home made soup, trout with a pickled sauce, turnip tops with spicy sausages and a cornmeal sweet.
The Pousada is on the main road 13 kms out of Manteigas, on the road to Gouveia.
