Guimaraes is justifiably called the cradle of the nation as it was the first capital of Portugal and the birthplace of the first king of Portugal Afonso Henriques, who was born in 1139 in the 10th century castle. There are many beautiful historic buildings in Guimaraes, one of them being the ducal palace of the Bragancas, who ruled Portugal from 1640 to 1910. The palace has been restored, has a museum and houses an excellent collection of portraits.
The Pousada Santa Marinha opened in 1985, when it was awarded the National Architectural Prize and is thought by many to be one of the best and most palatial of all the Pousadas. It is situated on a hill just outside the town of Guimaraes in a rebuilt and renovated 12th century Augustinian convent. This is a stunning hotel with beautifully furnished rooms and huge public rooms.
The specialities of the menu include fried shrimps and mushrooms with olive oil and garlic, cod topped with cornbread, goat stew and rich almond and sugar cake.
The Pousada is approximately 2 km from Guimaraes on the road to Penha: take a left turn in Costa and the Pousada is next to the church.
Situated in the prestigious Monte Lemos area of Praia da Luz, Casa Branca and Casa Irmao are two of fourteen townhouses which are built in a crescent around a pool and set in magnificent gardens. These 2 bedroom / 1 bathroom houses are only 10 minutes walk to the beach and less than that to the restaurants and shops of Praia da Luz. These are great properties for family holidays.
