Guimaraes is justifiably called the cradle of the nation as it was the first capital of Portugal and the birthplace of the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, who was born in 1139 in the 10th century castle. There are many beautiful historic buildings in Guimaraes, one of them being the ducal palace of the Bragancas, who ruled Portugal from 1640 to 1910. The palace has been restored, has a museum and houses an excellent collection of portraits.
There are two Pousadas in Guimaraes: the Pousada Nossa Senhora da Oliviera was a manor house situated in the centre of this medieval town. There are only 10 double rooms and 6 suites, so early booking is recommended.
The local menu specialities include, fish soup, cod “au gratin” with smoked ham, rabbit stew and creme brulee.
Situated in the prestigious Monte Lemos area of Praia da Luz, Casa Branca and Casa Irmao are two of fourteen townhouses which are built in a crescent around a pool and set in magnificent gardens. These 2 bedroom / 1 bathroom houses are only 10 minutes walk to the beach and less than that to the restaurants and shops of Praia da Luz. These are great properties for family holidays.
