Opened in 1942 the Santa Luzia Pousada was the first Pousada to offer accommodation and is a good example of typical Alentejo architecture.
Situated on the edge of this important border town, the Pousada is just outside the city walls and has a good view of the fantastic Aqueducto da Amoreira. The Aqueduct still supplies water to the Misericordia fountain and is 7 km long with an amazing 843 arches; not surprisingly, it took 124 years to build!
Being a border town there remain a considerable amount of fortifications, including the Fort de Santa Luzia built in the 17th century. In 1659 the town was at the centre of the war between Portugal and Spain and the battle of Linhas de Elvas was notable for a decisive defeat of the Spanish. The town was also the headquarters of the Duke of Wellington when he besieged the nearby Spanish town of Badajos.
On the local menu, the specialities are codfish with eggs, potatoes and onion, pork trotters in a coriander marinade and a local pudding with prunes.
The Pousada is situated on the busy N4 (it can be noisy).
