Opened in 1993, the Pousada de Santa Christina is one of the newer Pousadas. The hotel is beautifully furnished and decorated and is a haven of peace and tranquility after a days sightseeing. Close by is one of the best preserved Roman sites in Europe, Conimbriga, said to date from 200 BC where there are two main houses with mosaic floors and working fountains.
12 kms away is the university town of Coimbra (pronounced Quimbra). The university was founded in 1290 and until the 1900s was the only one in Portugal: the university and town must not be missed.
The local menu includes a regional spicy sausage with pumpkin and walnut, grilled codfish and olive oil, roast chicken with pepper sauce and egg and almond pudding.
The Pousada can be found on the main road which runs parallel to the Lisbon Porto motorway.
