The Pousada de Amares is ideally situated to explore the cultural sites of Minho. Located in the small village of Santa Maria do Bouro near to Amares, the Pousada is within a 12th century Cistercian Monastery that has been carefully restored while including modern features.
Approximately 15 kms away is the ancient town of Braga, the religious capital of Portugal. Here you will find many fine churches, the most important being the Se or Cathedral originally built in the 11th century but added to over the years with various architectural styles. The museum houses many religious artefacts from the 11th century onwards and in the Capela dos Reis, the naturally mummified body of Archbishop Lourenco can be viewed.
Nearby to Braga, to the north, is the Capela de Sao Frutuoso, one of the oldest churches in the country dating from the 7th century. To the east of Braga is the church Bom Jesus do Monte. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, the church is reached by a stunning Baroque staircase of over a thousand steps.
The Pousada de Amares is also close to the Peneda Geres National Park, a stunning mountain range with some of the most beautiful scenery in Portugal. Here many types of flora and fawna can be found some of which are endangered. There are also ancient settlements from prehistoric civilisations. The lush fields and vineyards that surround the Pousada make this a peaceful and relaxing place to stay.
Local dishes to be found in the restaurant include clear chicken broth, roast codfish with cornbread and stewed pork loin.
From Amares, follow the Geres road to Bouro Santa Maria - the pousada is in the centre of the village.
