The 15th century castle of the village of Alvito was restored and opened as a beautiful Pousada in 1993. Originally built for Sr Joao da Silveira, once the Secretary of State, who was created Baron by King Afonso V, it was unique at the time in being the only castle not owned by the royal family.
The superb garden, which is full of citrus bushes and ornamental lawns, was created from the agricultural land of the medieval castle and encloses the excellent swimming pool. Local places to visit in the village include the parish church, the Misericordia church and the Chapel of Sao Sebastiao. Nearby the S. Cacufate ruins, once owned by the famous sailor and explorer, Vasco da Gama and the dams (barragems) of Odivelas and Alvito are also worth seeing.
This is a famous wine growing area and the local menu has a full selection of Alentejo wines and includes fresh tomato soup, braised codfish with cumin, lamb chops with coriander sauce and local almond sweets.
The Pousada de Alvito can be found in the centre of the village.
