Pousada de Almeida is a recently built hotel sitting within the walls of the village but despite it's modern atmosphere it reflects the history and culture of Almeida, which is now classified as a National heritage site. The Foz Coa Archaeological Park is close by and also worth a visit.
Almeida is a fortified town, close to the border with Spain and has changed hands between the Portuguese, Spanish and French several times. Wellington's army was under siege here in the Peninsular Wars. The town was famously destroyed in 1810 when a trail of gunpowder from a barrel being transferred to the ramparts was ignited by a French shell - the explosion was immense, buildings were reduced to rubble and many were killed.
The Pousada Restaurant specialises in regional dishes such as fish soup, codfish stuffed with smoked ham, grilled young goat with creamed potatoes and almond pudding.
The Pousada is easy to find in the small town of Almeida. Take the IP5 towards the Spanish border and before reaching Vilar Formoso, take the EN 332 north to Almeida.
