Near to the agricultural town of Crato, Flor da Rosa is a fortified monastery built for the Knights of the Order of Malta. The Pousada is steeped in history: the last Prior of the monastery had a claim to the Portuguese throne when Dom Henrique died in 1580 childless, however the claim was tenuous and his reign was short lived.
Crato is known for it's pottery and it is possible to watch the craftsmen at work and buy samples of the pottery. The town also has the remains of a castle and a library housed in the 18th century prison. Approximately 20 kms from Crato is the walled town of Portalegre. This town is renowned for it's tapestry and silk weaving, a past source of wealth for the area reflected in the grand merchant's houses. The museum holds a collection of ceramics. The remains of a medieval castle overlook the town itself.
The Pousada successfully incorporates the medieval history of the monastery with the modern conveniences of the 21st century. The medieval cloisters and vaulted ceilings retain the atmosphere of a bygone age and the gardens are laid out to the original design of the Malta Cross.
Traditional cuisine can be enjoyed in the restaurant and includes scrambled eggs with wild asparagus, codfish with tomato and coriander, veal steak with niza cheese and almond deserts.
The pousada is situated in the village of Flor da Rosa, which is about 2 km north of Crato on the road to Nisa.
