Located in the small village of Vila Pouca de Beira, this Pousada is close to the mountain ranges of the Serra da Estrela and Serra do Acor making this an ideal spot for exploring these areas. The natural park of the Serra da Estrela is the largest mountain range in Portugal and has the highest peak. In the winter there is skiing available on the upper slopes and during the summer, hiking trails lead walkers through stunning scenery.
Approximately 40 kms to the west is the ancient university town of Coimbra. Occupying a hilly area with the university sitting at the top, Coimbra is steeped in history, its' alleys and lanes perfect for exploring.
To the west of the Pousada is the village of Belmonte. Overlooking the village is a restored 13th century castle that was the birthplace and family residence of the explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil.
The Convento do Desagravo in which the Pousada is housed, was built on the orders of the Bishop Count Dom Fransisco de Lemos de Faria Pereira during the last quarter of the 18th century. It was later turned into a military hospital before being renovated and restored as a Pousada. The Pousada opened in 2002 having being designed with modern convenience in mind while preserving the history of the building. The beautiful setting of the Pousada creates a peaceful atmosphere. Local dishes are served in the restaurant and include traditional charcuterie with poached eggs, trout fried in olive oil with almonds, duck pie and tigelada in the local style (traditional desert).
Vila Pouca da Beira is a small village on the N 342, north east of Arganil, just before the junction with the IC 7.
