The Pousada Dom Joao IV is located in the former convent of Chagas de Cristo situated in the same square as the Paco Ducal, the favourite royal residence of the Braganca dynasty, the last monarchy to rule Portugal until the foundation of the republic state in 1910.

The Braganca family established their seat in Vila Vicosa in the 15^th century but they did not seize the throne until the 17^th century when Joao IV became the first Braganca king.  His descendents then continued to rule Portugal until they were deposed; the last King, Manuel II, died in exile in England in 1932.  The family still continues with the present Duke of Braganca, Dom Duarte.  The palace itself was started in the 16^th century and building continued into the 17^th century.  It is open to the public and tours are available to see the collection of family memorabilia.

The old town of Vila Vicosa was built in the 13^th century and is still surrounded by stone walls.  The castle was the original seat of the Bragancas before construction of the palace and, from it's roof, there is a good view of the 5000 acre royal hunting ground.  Much of the town uses marble from the huge local quarries, which heightens its sense of grandeur, it is used on anything from pavements to public conveniences.

Approximately 6 kms from Vila Vicosa is the small town of Borba noticeable for its whiteness, anything that is not white washed is made of white marble.  Here visitors can browse the numerous antique shops and sample the local wine considered to be one of the best in the country.

The Pousada de Dom Joao IV has been converted from the convent in which it stands, into a comfortable hotel while retaining much of its history.  The convent cells, retreats and the oratories have been kept intact and guests can sit in the shaded cloisters.  The menu is regional and includes clam chowder, dogfish in a marinade with garlic and coriander, roast leg of pork and regional deserts.

The Pousada is situated next to the palace on the edge of the village coming in on the road from Borba.
