Located at the heart of the Peneda / Geres National Park,  the Pousada de Sao Bento enjoys unrivalled views over the river Cavado and the dam of the Barragem da Canicada. The Park is a haven for flora and fauna, with many species of trees and plants as well as wild ponies, pigs, deer and wolves. Bird watchers will have plenty of opportunity to observe the many types of bird that live here,  however the park is also excellent for those who just want to stroll through the peaceful surroundings. Conservation is of great concern and visitors can appreciate this in the beautiful landscapes and stunning scenery.
 The area has many rivers and reservoirs, with several dams in the area controlling the network. The nearby town of Caldas do Geres is a popular spa and many, including Portuguese royalty, have taken the remedies and waters here. To the south is the town of Braga, an ancient town and the religious capital of Portugal. There are many fine churches here of which the most important is the Se  (Cathedral). Near to Braga is the church Bom Jesus do Monte. The church is reached via a stunning Baroque staircase of 1000 steps and is set in wonderful gardens.
The Pousada de Sao Bento itself, was a former hunting lodge converted and opened in 1968 to include all modern amenities. Many of the features of the lodge have been retained including the high beamed ceiling and stone fireplace of the sitting room which make this an extremely comfortable Pousada. Guests can relax and enjoy the  dramatic views from the terrace overlooking the river and lake. Local cuisine is served in the restaurant and includes trout in red wine, pork and chicken soup and regional puddings.
To find the Pousada, take the EN 103 north east out of Braga towards Chaves and take the left turn to Canicada.
