The Pousada de Setubal is named Sao Filipe after the King who built the seventeenth century Fortress in which the pousada was constructed some 40 years ago. King Phillip II of Spain (King Phillip I of Portugal) built the castle as defence against the English who, having defeated his Spanish Armada, had somewhat sullied his reputation and self confidence.
The pousada is situated in a stunning position overlooking the River Sado estuary to the sea and the Serra da Arrabida Natural Park. The terrace has been built so clients can enjoy the magnificent view to best advantage. As the hotel is in such a commanding position, it is a steep climb, up some steps to the Pousada, from the car park and the building itself, which does not have a lift, is on different levels too. The small adjoining Chapel has azulejo (tiles) lined walls which relate the life of St Philip.
Setubal is Portugal's third largest port and a major industrial centre but with some good beaches on the peninsula de Troia and interesting monuments to see, it is worthy of a visit. The greatest monument is the Church (Ingreja) de Jesus which is probably the first of the Manueline buildings. Twisted pillars made from granite from the Serra da Arrabida support the vault.
The area is also a grape growing region with some notable red and white wines being produced by Jose Maria da Fonseca. In particular, this is the region for the muscatel grape and the famous Moscatel de Setubal which makes a fine dessert wine.
To find the Pousada, head out of Setubal to the west on Avenida Luisa Todi and follow the signs to the Pousada.
