Opened in 1992, the new Pousada of Sao Miguel is situated on a hill overlooking the plains of the Alentejo to the north of the heavily fortified town of Estremoz. The area is well known for hunting, which is seen in the trophies on the wall and the large open fireplaces throughout the Pousada. Coarse fishing and other water sports are available at the nearby Maranhao Barragem.
The area is also well known for the local wine produced at Borba which is just the other side of Estremoz from Sousel. Going the other way, a visit to the royal stud farm at Alter do Chao is worthwhile as the beautiful Lusitanian horses are bred here.
The local specialities on the menu include a tomato soup with fried pork, cod turnovers with sweet pepper rice, stewed giblets of hen and a sweet made with walnuts.
Coming north from Estremoz, turn left and leave Sousel to the west; the Pousada is situated on the top of the hill about 3 km from the village.
