 Arraiolos is a very small, whitewashed traditional Alentejo town, world famous for it's hand made carpets, the manufacture of which is a cottage industry in the area. There are a number of carpet makers in the town where you can see carpets being  made and there is an exhibition in the town hall.
The Pousada is situated in a valley to the north of the town and was originally a convent dating from the 14th century until it was rebuilt, very cleverly, with a mixture of old and modern architecture and opened in 1996. There are 31 rooms and it has lovely cloisters and a beautiful garden.
 The town of Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Town and capital of the Alentejo, is 20 km to the south and contains a wealth of history.
 The local menu includes cream of pea soup with smoked ham, dogfish in coriander marinade, roast pork loin with paprika paste and local sweets.
The Pousada is just to the north of Arraiolos on the road to Pavia.
