Situated on the banks of the River Sado, not to far from Setubal and Lisbon is the hillside town of Alcacar do Sal. The Pousada of Dom Afonso II was originally the town's castle and was restored and opened as a Pousada in 1998.
The town was originally a centre for salt production but the salt flats have now been replaced by green fields, mainly of rice. The town itself has been conquered and re-conquered many times by the Romans, Arabs, Vikings and others and is full of history.
The river Sado estuary is a protected area and there are many wading birds and other wildlife to be seen. Along the coast there are many beaches which see very few people.
The local menu includes vegetable soup, fried eel with tomato rice, lamb stew with pennyroyal cream and a local egg pudding.
The Pousada is easily found in the castle, which dominates the town.
