The Pousada Dom Diniz is situated in the small walled town of Vila Nova de Cerveira on the banks of the River Minho, with Spain just across the river. A new bridge links the two countries: Vigo and the religious city of Santiago do Compostela are close by and can be easily visited by guests at the Pousada.
The Pousada itself was built around the beginning of the 14th century and was a strong fortress which withstood more than one attack by the Spanish. Many of the rooms have their own private courtyard and the restaurant has fabulous views across the Minho to Spain.
The local menu specialities include vegetable soup, cod “au gratin” with onions, roast pork with baked potatoes and egg and almond sweet.
From Porto, drive north on the IC 1 which hugs the coast and turns inland following the River Minho. The Pousada is easily found within the fortifications of the town of Vila Nova de Cerveira.
