The Pousada is situated in the restored palace which Dom Diniz built for his wife Queen Isabel, who died there in 1336. Opened in 1970, a good sized swimming pool and terrace has now been added.
Estremoz is the liveliest of the three marble towns with a large central square, lined with restaurants and shops where, on Saturdays, the weekly local market is held selling what are renowned as some of the best cheeses in Portugal.
Estremoz was one of the most strongly fortified towns at it's height, with a population several times what it is today. There is a small but interesting museum and the panoramic view from the thirteenth century Torre das Tres Coroas, Tower of three crowns is magnificent.
The area is rich in marble and in the white town of Borba, just eleven kilometres away, many simple buildings are afforded splendour from the prolific use of this material. Although the town is unassuming, the wines produced locally are not and are well worth trying.
The Pousada has a restaurant serving regional dishes such as tomato, cottage cheese and oregano salad, monkfish with clams and coriander, roast lamb with rosemary and the usual local puddings.
The Pousada is a white and rather austere looking building which is easily seen above the town as it occupies a rather a commanding position.
