Formally a 13th century convent, this Pousada is located at the heart of the historical town of Beja. With streets shaded by orange trees, Beja is a fascinating place to explore. Stroll through the narrow streets of the old quarter lined with attractive white washed houses with cast iron grills.
Visit the Convento de Nosso Senhora da Conceicao which houses the Rainha D. Leonor Museum as well a Rococo chapel and some wonderful 16th and 17th century painted tiles. The convent was also home to one of Beja's most famous inhabitants. Sister Mariana Alceforado was a nun who lived in the convent during the 1600's. She fell in love with a French soldier and on his return to France wrote several love letters to him. The publication of the letters in 1669 did not enhance the harmony within the order and the translations have since become internationally famous although the originals have never been found.
To the north of the old town is Beja castle built in the 14th century on the site of a Roman fort. Near to the castle is the Basilica of Santo Amaro one of the few remaining buildings built prior to the rule of the Moors. There is a archeological museum here and from it's elevated position, there are excellent views over the Alentejo countryside.
Beja Pousada itself is a wonderful building with beautifully painted ceilings and frescos. It combines history with comfort and is an excellent base for exploring the local area. Local dishes to savour are Mint soup, Codfish with cream, Lamb stew and local egg cake.
The Pousada is easy to find as it is situated in the centre of Beja, next to the Police Station.
