Braganca has a medieval walled town called the Citadela and was the seat of the Royal House of Braganca who ruled Portugal from 1640 to 1910. The Pousada is modern, situated on the top of a hill in the Noguiera mountain range and overlooks this very interesting historic town. Also worth seeing are the Renaissance church of Igreja de Sao Bento and the museum in the Bishop's Palace. To the east of Braganca is the small town of Babe. It was here in 1387 that the Portuguese King Joao I made the "Treaty of Babe" with John of Gaunt of England who agreed to relinquish any claim to the throne of Portugal with the marriage of his daughter Phillipa to Joao I. The national park of Montesinho lies to the north of Braganca and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. This reserve covers some 70.000 hectares of unspoilt wild terrain.
The local menu is very strong on pork with recipes such as grilled spicy sausage, codfish stuffed with smoked ham, roast pork loin with chestnuts and chestnut pudding
The Pousada is on the right hand side of the road from Vila Real in the Estrada do Turismo
