Located approximately 12 Kms from Lisbon city centre, the Pousada Dona Maria is an excellent base for exploring the one of Europe's top capital cities..
The Palace was built in the 18th century by Dom Pedro III and was home to Queen Maria I during the 39 years that she ruled Portugal; unfortunately Queen Maria is mainly remembered for the religious mania she developed during her reign. The palace is open to the public and is worth a visit. The museum houses an art collection once owned by the royal family and the mirror lined throne room is embellished with gilt carvings. The formal gardens with their fountains and lakes, provide an area to relax after the hustle and bustle of the city.
Lisbon itself is a magnificent city to visit. Known for it's excellent shopping, culture, history and dining Lisbon can provide something for everyone. Along with Coimbra, Lisbon is also home to the traditional Portuguese Fado music, which is played in many bars.
The Pousada was opened in 1995 and has been tastefully decorated with it's history in mind. The 18th century designed friezes and paintings are hand painted and on the ground floor is a small theatre. The restaurant “Cozinha Velha” is renowned for it's excellent cuisine and is located in what were the royal kitchens with timbered ceiling and stone fireplace. Local dishes include Codfish turnovers, Steamed Dover Sole and Fried Veal Liver with saute potatoes.
The Pousada is situated in a square in front of the Palace of Queluz, “ The Portuguese Versailles”, in a building that once housed the Royal Guard of the court.
