Located in the old village of Alijo, this Pousada is set in the heart of the Douro wine region. The surrounding countryside is home to the large Quintas of the Port Wine Houses, where the grapes are grown in terraced vineyards down the hillsides.
The Pousada is named after one of the great names of the Port Wine industry. The young James Forrester came to work at his uncle's firm, Offleys Forrester and Company, where he battled to keep the purity of the Port Wine. He was known as an artist and, as well as paintings, he produced several maps of the area. He was made Baron Forrester by the King of Portugal for his services to the wine but in 1862, returning from lunch in a Rabelo (boats used to transport wine, he fell and drowned.
This is the perfect place to get to know the history of one of Portugal's most famous exports, Port. Visit one of the Quintas to learn the production techniques and sample the produce. Experience the wonderful scenery of the area by taking a cruise on the nearby River Douro or a train journey through the countryside. See the famous tile walls depicting scenes of the wine making process at Pinhao train station. Many of the local festivals are held in August while the "Vindima" grape harvest begins in the autumn.
Celebrating the local traditions of the area, the Pousada Restaurant serves a regional menu with such dishes as saute bread with asparagus, grilled octopus fillets and traditional egg cake.
The Pousada is easy to locate as it is in the town of Alijo itself, next door to the Post Office (Correio). To find Alijo, take the major road out of Vila Real towards Braganca, turning right for Alijo before reaching Murca.
