Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Pousada is located in the village of Sagres in the Algarve region. This village has an important historical and maritime significance as it is from here, some 500 years ago, that the man after whom the Pousada is named, Infante D.Henrique, (Henry the Navigator) son of King Joao 1 and his English born Queen, Phillipa of Lancaster, built his School of Navigation in the 15th century. It was from here that Prince Henry's expeditions were planned and from where the Caravels left on their voyages of discovery to the New World. Only a few kilometres away, on another promontory, stands Cape St Vincent lighthouse. Cabo de Sao Vicente saw many sea battles fought by such great men as Admirals Nelson and Drake.
The cliffs and beaches are spectacular along this part of the coast and the prevailing westerly wind bites into the cliffs throwing the seas high up onto the rocks. There is an active fishing fleet here and the local fish can be savoured in the restaurants of Sagres or, indeed, in the Pousada restaurant itself. The regional menu served in Pousada de Sagres includes Seafood soup, stuffed sardines, fried lamb chops and Algarvian almond sweets.
The Pousada is located in the town itself, on the coast, overlooking the ocean. Follow the main road into the village centre and it is well signposted from that road.
Only 5 km from the Pousada, on the road to Cape to Vincent, you will find the Forteleza do Beliche. Said to be the most southwesterly restaurant, it has a commanding view and is also run by the Pousada in Sagres.
