Where to eat in the Algarve, Portugal
Restaurante Way Point in Lagos
The Marina Club have, at last, opened their own restaurant and we are pleased to say that it maintains the Marina Club's reputation for innovation and quality. Restaurante Way Point is situated on the marina quayside but can also be accessed from the Marina Club Aparthotel.
Unfortunately one of the most professional and helpful people in the hotel business is leaving for greener pastures, after seven years in the most stressful of jobs. Marta Atunes is departing from the position of General Manager of the popular Marina Club in Lagos and we wish her well in whatever she does next. The good news was that Marta entertained John and Maggie to lunch at the Way Point restaurant, which the Marina Club opened two months ago in June.
The décor fits in with the Marina Club's style, spotlessly clean and shiny, slightly minimalist and very modern. As the temperature was around 28 degrees (September is a good time to go to the Algarve!), we chose to eat on the terrace under the shade of a large umbrella, overlooking the main pool.
We were royally looked after by the head waiter Frederico, who spoke excellent English and advised us very carefully on our choices. We opened with the couvert, luckily there was only one of us (me!) who had a taste for the centre piece of tiny baby octopus with a vinegar dressing. With it, there were three dips with toast soldiers, a basil pesto, a garlic and mayonnaise and a smoked Algarvian sausage, beautiful!
The three main courses were beautiful and very different. Marta had her favourite of Tagliatelle with tiny prawns and a creamy turmeric sauce, Maggie had a crispy duck salad with a soy sauce dressing and I had Bacalhau (cod) in shreds with new potatoes and shreds of sweet pepper. We finished with two sweets, a cinamon panacotta with strawberry sauce and a chocolate mousse with a coffee and Irish whiskey sauce. The whole meal was accompanied by a very good Rosé from Alvor. (Algarvian wines are getting better and better)
The Way Point is an excellent restaurant, very modern décor and Chef Claudio has put together a modern menu, everything is beautifully done with style. This is not a typical Portuguese restaurant and is slightly above average in price but well worth it.
