Let's Walk in the Algarve - September programme
The Algarve is an ideal place to walk but to find the real Algarve, you must park your car and explore on foot - there is so much more to this region than its famous coastline
Dr Julie Statham with colleagues Silvia Smeman and Peter Lammin of Portugal Walks organise a programme of walks running from September to June each year. All are welcome to go along and there is no need to book. There is a charge for each walk (usually €5) which includes a donation to charity. Please note the walks start promptly and all walks will take place unless there is torrential rain!

September Programme
Saturday September 13 - The Two Rivers & Vale de Lama
A fairly easy 2 hour walk along the banks of the Arade and Odelouca rivers and up to the top of Ilha Rosario for spectacular views over the countryside.
10.30am start - meet at the Mira Rio cafe on the Silves to Monchique road. Cross over the bridge into Silves and follow the road out for 5km, the cafe is on the left on a sharp bend (take care when turning).
Wednesday September 17 - Let's Walk from the top of the Algarve
A 2 hour circular walk that starts at the highest point in the Algarve, Foia - moderately easy with a gentle climbs and awe inspiring views.
10.30 am start - meet at the cafe on the summit of Foia. From the A22 follow the road to Monchique and then follow the signs to Foia. At the summit there is a cafe, shop and plenty of parking,
Saturday September 20 - Lets walk from Vale Fuzeiros
A fascinating walk of 2 hours in this little known area where you can pass menhirs dating from 3,000BC and ancient tombs from the Visigoth era.
10.30am start - meet at the cafe/restaurant Casa da Vinha in Vale Fuzeiros. From Silves take the road towards Messines and after 9km turn left to Amorosa. Drive through Amorosa on the main road and you will then see a left turn to Vale Fuzeiros. When you come into the village, Casa da Vinha is at the far end on the left side.
Wednesday September 24 - Lets Walk from the Roman bridge at Tor
An amazing 2.5 hour circular walk through the countryside, crossing the Algibre river and visiting a 17th century Quinta.
10.30 am start - meet on the edge of the village of Tor. Leave the A22 at the Boliqueime / Loule exit and follow the signs for Loule. After the quarry turn left and at the next T junction left again. Follow the road down to Ribeira Algibre and after crossing the river turn right. Follow the road for 5km and park by the side of the road just before reaching the traffic lights.
Saturday September September 27 - Let's Walk on the West Coast
A superb fairly easy 2.5 hour walk through unspoilt countryside, cliff tops and along the beach deep in the Cape St Vincent Natural Park.
10.30 start - meet at the entrance to the 'Perimetro Florestal' near Vila do Bispo. From the A22 take the road to Sagres and turn off at the exit for Vila do Bispo & Aljezur, drive along the Aljezure road for 1km and the sign for the Florestal is on the left - there is plenty of parking space.
Wednesday October 1 - Let's Walk along the Algibre
A moderately easy 2.5 hour walk through the unspoilt Barrocal and along the Algibre river.
10.30 start - meet at the cafe/bar in Tenoca. From the A22 exit at Boliqueime/ Loule and follow signs to Loule, once you have crossed over the motorway turn left signed Campina and follow the road to Alfontes, once in Alfontes the road makes a sharp bend to the left continue for another 300m and the cafe is on the right (with a sign to the right to Perreira).
