Things to do in the Algarve, Portugal
Lagos Zoo
The zoo is situated about 15 minutes drive from Lagos, between the villages of Barao de Sao Joao and Bensafrim in the grounds behind the "O Cangalho" Restaurant and houses more than 120 animal and 200 botanical species from the 5 continents, in a natural environment: Conservation, Education and Protection is their motto.
Species of animals the visitor can expect to see are emus, wallabies, monkeys, lemurs, the Iberian Lynx, squirrels and exotic birds and parrots, all kept in a natural environment.
It is a popular place with young children, especially the farm area which has ponies, sheep, goats, ducks and chickens where the children may get near to the animals and can actually touch them, if they wish.
There is a flight tunnel, 60 metres in length, which enables visitors to watch wonderfully coloured birds in free flight.
The Primates live on a specially constructed island, with great scenery, climbing frames and ropes to swing through the trees.
There is ample parking, a shop, restaurant, snack bar, playground for children, an educational area and handicraft shop. Go and see for yourselves and have a great family day out.
