Head west from Lagos along the EN125 and the landscape changes from rolling hills to the flat moorland typical of cape terrain. Here you will find Sagres, the most south-westerly community in Europe. Re-built in the nineteenth century following the earthquake of 1755, Sagres sits atop the cliffs flanked by two headlands: Atalaia Point and Sagres Point.
Sagres is popular with visitors due its' links to Henry the Navigator and the voyages of discovery, for it is here that Henry established his school of seamanship. Rua da Forteleza runs directly up the headland to the Forteleza that dominates Sagres point and a little further on is Cape St Vincent “Where land ends and the sea begins”
Sagres' main street, from Praca da Republica (main square) to the fishing harbour, is lined with restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets. The local fishing fleet ensures that these are well stocked with a range of fresh fish and seafood. At the fishing harbour it is possible to watch the local boat builders at work while sitting in a nearby cafe. Boat trips to view Costa Vicentina Reserve from the sea are also available. Close to the harbour is Praia da Baleeira one of several excellent beaches in the area. Others to try are Praia da Mareta, Tonel and Martinhal. Sagres also has one of only two Pousadas in the Algarve, enjoying a spectacular view over the fort and Cape St Vincent.
The strong westerly breezes from the Atlantic ensure that Sagres is popular with surfers and windsurfers alike and for those keen to have a go, there is a surf school in the village. Walkers will enjoy the spectacular coastline and in the spring and autumn, Sagres is a point of reference for the migratory birds that wheel past the cliffs in great numbers.
