Located at the southernmost tip of Portugal - and one of the country`s most beautiful regions - the Algarve is a must for all serious golfers. And as one of the country`s most popular tourist destinations, you`ll have a lot of competition should you choose to hit one of the region`s plentiful golf courses.

Located around 12 kilometres from the region`s airport in Faro, the area of Quinta da Lago, boasts various golf courses - with Pinheiros Altos enjoying the best reputation of them all. Known for offering a mental challenge, and with a par of 72, negotiating its intricate holes is difficult and rewarding. This 27 hole course is complete with a chipping and bunker area, professional shop and numerous bars and restaurants. It offers a complete day-long golfing experience. Just east of here in the Castro Marim, the most easterly course, is packed with narrow fairways and deceptively easy holes; the so-called `leaky pipe` irrigation ensures all-year-round gaming.

If you fancy a quieter, more exclusive golfing experience head to `Colina Verde` in the Eastern Algarve - conveniently located next to a set of holiday apartments. This 9 hole course is better for the beginner/intermediate, as its holes offer the chance of improving your short game. With less facilities and no-hire option, this is for those who prefer secluded golfing.

On the other side of the peninsula, in the Western Algarve, lies the Parque de Floresta course. This is definitely the course for those wishing to appreciate the landscape and sea-side views of the area - something the course`s architect built into his plans. With a par of 72 and a particularly difficult 15th hole, this is not for the uninitiated, but its excellent hire and coaching services make it worthy of a visit.

Located just eastward of Parque da Floresta are the Boavista and Palmares courses. Offering a standard and accessible course for the regular player, Boavista boasts superb scenery and golfing under olive trees, a full hire and lessons course and, unusually for the area, lessons with a professional golfer. Palmares meanwhile, boasts similarly stunning views, and with a fifth hole of 550 metres, a breath-taking challenge.

British golf-lovers will probably want to head to the course designed by Nick Faldo. But don`t expect luxuriant foliage here; cacti and the odd oak surround limestone bunkers on this difficult, but do-able, 18 hole, 72 par course. Just a couple of kilometres from Faldo`s course is the Silves course. Designed to test your ability to hit the right shot with the appropriate club, with various hazards - such a large, unnecessary water features - built in.

Those wanting up-to-date course technology should head to Salgados, the newest course. The course is about as compact as 18-holers get, yet presents great challenges, abounding with water hazards and other obstacles. Just two kilometres north of here is the Sheraton Pine Cliffs course, for those who want to live in the lap of luxury. With a relaxing course - possessing a par of just 66 - it is not difficult to see why this course - within close proximity of the beach - was Nigel Mansell`s favourite.
