Beach Flags - what do they mean?

Many of the Algarve's beaches have been awarded Bandeiras Azuis or blue flags in recognition of their achievement of the required standards for cleanliness, safety and facilities.  In order to retain this prized status, standards have to be maintained.

If you see the following solid colour flags flying on the beach - this is what they mean

GREEN flag - swimming permitted

YELLOW flag - swimming forbidden

RED flag - it is forbidden to swim or enter the water

Blue & White chequered flag - the beach is temporarily unattended
