Around 1700, the introduction of industry was being promoted to stem the emigration of Portuguese to Brazil. Weaving, glass making, silk spinning and, of course, Port production, in the Douro region, were all soon thriving industries. The Methuen & Utrecht Treaties were altering the political map and Portugal gained more land in Brazil, where serious quantities of gold and then diamonds were discovered. Socially, Portugal was up with the rest of Western Europe but the government had been indecisive, the Inquisition had spread and the image of the House of Braganza was tranished…it's all in the latest installment of Portugal's history.
Situated in Rua dos Pescadores and with outside and inside tables, Agua na Boca has a wide menu with a good fresh fish selection and some interesting Algarvian specialities. The atmosphere was excellent and the restaurant full on the evening of our visit. Agua na Boca really was the mouthwatering experience it's name promises.
Apart from another long awaited Let's walk with our dogs on October 19th starting at Barao de Sao Joao (the last one we went on attracted about 40 people and 30 dogs!), there are another 7 walks to choose from in October. As usual, the walks take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays and include outings along the Algibre river, from Benafim, along the Carrapateira river valley, from Querenca along the river valley, from Encherim along the irrigation channel and through unspoilt countryside in the Serra de Cao. Everyone is welcome - just turn up at the appointed time and place - take a look at the Let's walk in the Algarve October programme, which tells you everything you need to know.
