Algarve Retreats wishes all our Newsletter readers a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year
Here we are, in the depths of winter, with Christmas behind us and the New Year to look forward to so now is the time to book your holiday in the sun for 2008. In addition to many old favourites, Algarve Retreats has added some lovely new properties for you to choose from including a beautiful new hotel, the Memmo Baleeira, in Sagres.
In this issue, Jackie and Tony have been to O Celeiro, one of the best restaurants in the Western Algarve. Martin Ward takes a break from Portuguese wine this month as we start our new series “A Brief History of Portugal”: written by David Devereux, you will find that this not only provides a background to the country's history but is very amusing as well. Julie Statham gives us her Let's walk in The Algarve programme for January and we have the usual weather reports and newsbytes.
Memmo Baleeira Hotel: Situated overlooking the Baleeira beach and harbour at Sagres with views to Martinhal beach across the bay, this beautiful, recently opened (August 2007) hotel has fantastic views across the sea. Why not take a look at the Memmo Baleeira Hotel?
Casa Luz Bay: Situated only about 200 metres from the beach, Casa Luz Bay is a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom townhouse with a small heated pool. This is an ideal property for a family holiday, which is within walking distance of all the amenities of Praia da Luz. Ring 01283 821072 or email enquiries@algarve-retreats.com

As promised, friend and colleague David Devereux starts his easy to read walk through Portugal's colourful history this month. Our journey will take us from the time of the Ruling House of Avis through the glory days of the 15th century, Spanish domination and invasion by the French to the overthrow of the Monarchy and the start of the Republic State up to 1985 and Portugal's entry into the European Economic Community. So, let's start; it's 1386 and Dom Joao I is on the throne……….
Situated on the south side of the N125 at the crossroads at Almadena, O Celeiro is one for that special night out. It is a restaurant that Jackie and Tony have been to before and it has never failed to impress with its welcome and outstanding menu. There's a certain amount of humour involved and we'll just leave you with the word “big”……….you'll need to visit Restaurante O Celeiro to experience the full effect!
This is the time of year of when nearly all of us make some kind of resolution to be more active, lose some weight, go to the gym. Well, we could all walk a little further and what better way to do it than with likeminded others in the beautiful Algarve. The January walks programme includes walks on Monchique, around Alto Fica, from Amorosa to Monte Boi and to the Arade Barragem.
Stay at the 4* Porches Praia apartments for only £25/night/apartment in January. The apartments available consist of one bedroom with en suite bathroom, a spacious lounge and dining area and a full kitchen.
